Trauma
The term ‘trauma’ is widely used and often misunderstood. For most people, trauma is not an isolated incident. It is an often inescapable state of mind, triggered by past or current life events and circumstances.
Trauma can be caused by anything which is simply too painful or confusing for the mind and body to process. It can be triggered by an unavailable or abusive parent, a narcissistic partner or any form of abuse. For many of Ruths’ clients their trauma is caused by the challenges of being a gay man in a straight word, an HIV+ diagnosis or careers which come with a heavy emotional load.
Too often the reality of trauma feels too much to face, so instead we abandon this part of ourselves. Ruth’s approach is to acknowledge trauma as lived experience that needs to be heard and seen.
In shining a light on clients’ trauma Ruth acts not as a witness but as their advocate, calling forth their innate knowing, skill and courage, so they can explore the wounds and begin to heal.
